EigenLayer Restaking Protocol Slashing Testnet Is Now Live

On December 20th, EigenLayer’s slashing testnet went live, marking a significant milestone for the restaking protocol. The mainnet launch is now pending approval of EigenLayer Improvement Protocol-002 (ELIP-002), which introduces crucial upgrades to the protocol.

Unique Stake Allocation and Operator Sets: Key Features of ELIP-002

The proposed slashing upgrade will introduce two innovative features: Unique Stake Allocation for node operators and Operator Sets for Actively Validated Services (AVS) on EigenLayer. These features aim to enhance the security and reliability of the Ethereum layer-1 network.

Unique Stake Allocation

Actively Validated Services are projects that leverage the security of the Ethereum layer-1 network to validate offchain services. Staked Ether (stETH) on the Ethereum L1 acts as staking collateral across blockchain ecosystems without unstaking the asset on the L1. Unique Stake Allocation allows restaking operators, which are the restaking validators on EigenLayer, to minimize slashing risks by designating portions of their staked funds as a ‘Unique Stake’ subject to slashing from only one AVS.

This protects the staked capital from unrelated tasks or Actively Validated Services. By implementing this feature, EigenLayer aims to promote trust in blockchain ecosystems by reducing the risk of slashing penalties for validators and restaking operators.

Operator Sets

Operator Sets give Actively Validated Services the option to organize operators into groups, assign tasks, and define the parameters for slashing. This feature promotes collaboration among node operators and AVS, allowing them to work together more efficiently and effectively.

What is Slashing?

Slashing is a mechanism that promotes trust in blockchain ecosystems by penalizing validators or restaking operators by taking a portion of their staked funds for errors, service failures, or dishonest behavior. These slashing penalties are intended to ensure that validators maintain onchain integrity for the networks they serve.

Benefits of Slashing

  • Enhanced Security: Slashing promotes trust in blockchain ecosystems by penalizing validators or restaking operators for any wrongdoing.
  • Increased Reliability: By introducing penalties for errors, service failures, or dishonest behavior, slashing ensures that validators maintain onchain integrity.
  • Improved Collaboration: Operator Sets promote collaboration among node operators and AVS, allowing them to work together more efficiently and effectively.

The Eigen Foundation has committed 1% of its EIGEN supply to the ETH Protocol Guild. This significant investment aims to support the growth and development of the Ethereum ecosystem.

EigenLayer’s AVS Community Grows

RedStone, a major oracle provider, has established an AVS on EigenLayer. The data validation service launched on EigenLayer in testnet mode with plans to grow the network over time.

Infura, an RPC node provider, also announced plans to launch as an AVS on EigenLayer as part of its expansion of its Decentralized Infrastructure Network (DIN). Infura’s DIN is a decentralized marketplace for APIs for Web3 developers.

EigenLayer Upgrades Restaking Rewards

In a recent blog post, EigenLayer announced it was upgrading restaking rewards. The upgrades, launching in January 2025, give Actively Validated Services the option of distributing rewards to operators based on performance.

Conclusion

EigenLayer’s slashing testnet has gone live, marking an important milestone for the restaking protocol. With the introduction of Unique Stake Allocation and Operator Sets, EigenLayer aims to enhance the security and reliability of the Ethereum layer-1 network. The mainnet launch is pending approval of ELIP-002, which will bring these features to production.

As EigenLayer continues to grow its AVS community and onboard consumer crypto applications, it is clear that this protocol has a bright future ahead. With its focus on innovation and collaboration, EigenLayer is poised to become a leader in the blockchain industry.
